I am working at the moment on a series of paintings based on an abandoned boat. The boat is situated in westport quay co mayo.I came accross it by chance and was instantly excited by its weather beaten aging beauty. In each painting i try to explore a small section of this boat.I want to show how time and nature can alter and create something new and beautiful in things we have overlooked and cast aside.I am facinated by colour and felt inspired by the textures and colours in this old decaying boat.I hope to capture in paint just a little piece of what nature has created. These are the first 3 in the series.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a painter with a passion for colour. The subject matter I choose to paint is often rather mundane. I see beauty in a rusted chain or an old forgotten boat, its journey reflected in the colours of its fragmented boards, its multi-hued peeling paint. I try to show beauty in objects that have otherwise exhausted their usefulness. My methodology is intuitive rather than calculated. I like to feel my way through a painting. I work mainly using oils and acrylic. Painting to me is just a series of marks on a canvas. I have a love of earthy colours and use thick rich impasto. My work is simply an exploration of colour reflected in the ever changing world of nature.
Scotch Quay March 2011
This is my first painting in almost 20 yrs. It is based on a series of sketches i did in my student days of a place in waterford called scott's quay.It is acrylic on canvas and measures 30 inches by 40 inches.
